One of the important elements of the English language is the Noun. As we learn from the dictionary and other informative grammar books 'a noun is name of person, place or a thing'. However it's important to know the various categories in to which a noun segregates itself. They are the 'types of nouns' and further get classified as follows:
i. Proper noun:
A proper noun is a kind of a noun which is a name of a person, place or a thing. An animal is also considered as a thing here. So we assimilate that proper noun will have the word which will be unique and special in its own sense. Something like the word 'America' which is the only name of a country and is unique is a proper noun... Wednesday, Neha, Sholay, George etc. where names of things are specified are proper nouns.
ii. Common noun:
Take a look at some sentences given below.
* A pen is mightier than the sword.
* A friend in need is friend in deed.
* The Rose is one of my favourite flowers.
The words in italics in the above given examples are common nouns. As we see from the third sentence that Rose is a proper noun as not all flowers are roses, so the word flowers are a common noun.
iii. Collective noun: By the very word 'collective' we get the meaning that it represents labelling a group such as 'bundle of joy', where 'bundles' is a collective noun or 'a bouquet of flowers' where the word 'bouquet' is a collective noun.
iv. Abstract noun: The nouns that are far away from any measurements, subtle in their meanings or those which can't be fathomed are 'abstract nouns'. Some examples are words such as 'love', 'anger', 'epiphany', 'masquerade'.
v. Countable noun: A noun which explains the numerical status of the word such as 'length', 'distances',' guys' are countable nouns.
vi. Mass or uncountable noun: As the name stands a Mass noun is the exact opposite of countable nouns. 'Her eyes were filled with water'. Though we know the importance of 'tears' here the word 'water' is used to imply the infinity of the same and which is simply unmeasured.
vii. Pronouns: The nouns which replaces the proper or common nouns are called as pronouns. The words such as 'he', 'she', 'they', 'us' are none other than pronouns.
b. Grammar worksheets
There are worksheets of grammar which consists of practical lessons involved with elements such as nouns, pronouns, verbs and its kinds, adjectives adverbs and so on. The learner is made to solve these worksheets step wise beginning from the elementary level to the advanced. Practice lessons in the advance levels are held once the learner clears thoroughly the primary and intermediate levels.
c. English grammar rules
For a beginner it is vital that he adheres to certain grammar rules such as:
i. Subject verb agreement: A learner should always follow a simple rule here that a singular subject needs a singular verb and a plural subject needs a plural verb. Often students get confused with the subject verb agreement and commit simple errors.
ii. Tenses: Tenses decide whether the sentence which you have written or spoken is correct as common mistakes are caused by using the tenses wrongly in a sentence. Understanding of grammar rules of such kinds will surely help in improving your English to a great deal.
